When is a Safety Certificate is Required?

In Queensland, a standard Safety Certificate is mandatory for light vehicles (up to 4.5t GVM) in these common situations: 

• Selling a Registered Vehicle: A current certificate must be provided to the buyer when a registered vehicle is sold or disposed of, other than to a licensed dealer.

• Transferring Ownership: Required for any private transfer of registration, including gifting a vehicle to a family member or friend.

• Transferring Registration from Interstate: If you move a vehicle into Queensland from another state or territory, it must pass an inspection before it can be registered locally.

• Re-Registering an Unregistered Vehicle: Any vehicle that has been unregistered (typically for more than three months) must be inspected before it can legally return to the road.

• Clearing a Defect Notice: If a vehicle is issued a defect notice by the police or transport inspectors, a certificate is often required to prove the faults have been repaired.

• Business Transfers: Required when transferring a vehicle's registration out of a business name to an individual or another entity.

When is a Certificate of Inspection (COI) Required?

Some vehicles require a Certificate of Inspection (COI) instead of a standard safety certificate. This applies to: 

• Ride-Share, Taxis, and Limousines: Vehicles used for "booked hire" or public passenger services (like Uber or DiDi) must undergo an annual safety inspection.

How long does a Safety Certificate last?

• Private Sellers: Valid for 2 months or 2,000km, whichever occurs first.

• Licensed Motor Dealers: Valid for 3 months or 1,000km, whichever occurs first.

• Single Use: A certificate can typically only be used for one registration transfer, this also means if you buy a car and decide to sell it before the 2 month and 2,000km threshold you will need a new Safety certificate.
